Bio
Ryan's journey in martial arts began in 2008 when he started training Krav Maga at the national training center in West LA. For two years, he immersed himself in the art of self-defense until he relocated to Orange County, where it was challenging to find Krav Maga classes. So, he decided to try MMA, a sport that was relatively new to him at the time. In 2010, he walked into a small gym in Garden Grove, where he met Nam Phan, the gym's owner, who had just finished appearing on the Ultimate Fighter, a show he knew nothing about. For the next six years, he mostly trained MMA, focusing primarily on the grappling side of the sport. It was at this gym where he earned his blue and purple belts.
In 2016, he transitioned entirely to jiu-jitsu under the guidance of Russ Miura, where he eventually earned his brown belt. However, a move to the north made it impractical to continue training in Lake Forest, so he started training at 10th Planet Costa Mesa in 2019. Throughout his journey, he has had the privilege of training with amazing people with different styles and approaches. In April of 2023, he received his black belt from Ronald Turner. Ryan's philosophy and technique always revolve around practical jiu-jitsu, emphasizing positional control and the fundamental aspects of the sport, such as guard retention, positional control, and escaping bad positions.
